Accelerated Reader Information
The Accelerated Reader Program can be confusing for parents and children alike. After a student takes a short quiz on the computer, s/he is assigned a starting reading level and point goal by the teacher. The child's reading level is usually a range of 2-3 reading levels.
To help students identify their levels easily, the books in the school libraries have been color coded with tape on the spine. There is a sticker inside each book with the book level and point value stated. On most stickers there is also the Interest Level Guide.

Interest Level Guide
There are designated interest levels for books. There could be a book written at a fifth grade Readability Level, but could have either a Lower, Middle, Middle+ or Upper Grade Interest Level, depending on the CONTENT. Middle+ and Upper books will contain more complex, mature themes. Check your children's books to see that they are reading at an appropriate Interest Level for their age. (Just because a 3rd grader is able to read all the words in "Wuthering Heights" does not mean she should be!)
LG - LOWER GRADE - K-4th graders
MG - MIDDLE GRADE - 5-8th graders
MG+ - MIDDLE GRADES PLUS - 6-9th graders
UG - UPPER GRADE - 8-12th graders
MG - MIDDLE GRADE - 5-8th graders
MG+ - MIDDLE GRADES PLUS - 6-9th graders
UG - UPPER GRADE - 8-12th graders
COLOR LEVEL GUIDE - Readability Level
(Example: a 3rd grade reader can decode the words in a book marked green) Books in Holliday Library range from K to 7 Readability levels with Interest levels of LG and MG. Books in Pontiac Library range from 3 to 10+ and Interest levels of MG, MG+, and a few UG. There are very few 9-10+ level books in the Pontiac library due to lack of interest in the content.
(Please keep in mind that most books written for an adult audience are written at a 5-6th grade reading level.)
